When I first saw this film, I attended a sneak preview on a saturday night in Palm Springs. It was a sold out showing, the audience was cheering, laughing and applauding. I was right there with them!!!! Goldie Hawn is gorgeous, hillarious and brilliant here!(isn’t she always?!!) Mel Gibson is equally good. The teaming of these two actors was awesome! Action, comedy, romance, this box office blockbuster has it all! A classic that gets better with each repeated viewing. Two movie icons together in a great movie!Critics were not kind to this movie, but audiences ignorred the reviews and enjoyed the film and it was a mega-hit, grossing over $80 million at the U.S. box office.

A British television series originally broadcast on CBS (and rebroadcast on PBS) in America in 1971, The Six Wives of Henry VIII remains a painless way to learn something about royal history and its impact on the political and religious landscape of England. Keith Michell stars as King Henry VIII, who assumes the throne as a boy after the death of his older brother and inherits the latter’s Spanish betrothed, Catherine of Aragon (Annette Crosbie), as well. Growing up and increasingly complicated in personality, with an ever-growing appetite for elusive happiness as well as power and food, Henry maneuvers (and is maneuvered by) forces around him to break from Rome and create the Church of England, in part to accommodate his wish for a divorce.
Each story of the king’s successive brides takes up an entire episode in the series. Dorothy Tutin plays the doomed Anne Boleyn, Anne Stallybrass is Henry’s favorite, Jane Seymour, Elvi Hale is Anne of Cleves, Angela Pleasence is Catherine Howard, and Rosalie Crutchley plays last-in-line Catherine Parr. A very large and fine supporting cast adds intrigu and extra layers of tragedy to the proceedings, especially John Baskcomb as Cardinal Wolsey, Wolfe Morris as Thomas Cromwell, and Ralph Bates as Thomas Culpepper. Each 90-minute episode was crafted by a different writer, but the series holds together very well under Keith Michell’s dazzling performance as the despicable if sympathetic Henry, whose emotional arc over many years and losses is something to see. –Tom Keogh

His ship docked in Seattle, Navy man John Baggs Jr. (Caan) has a a”Cinderella Libertya” pass, meaning he can be out until midnight a- so he intends to make the most of his evening. A great big rock hits the earth, and lots of people die. That’s pretty much all there is to it, and most of that was in the trailer. Can a major Hollywood movie really squak by with such a slender excuse for a premise? The old disaster-movie king, cheese-meister Irwin Allen (The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake), would have made a kitsch classic out of this, with Charlton Heston, rather than a resigned and mumbly Robert Duvall, as the veteran astronaut who risks several lives trying to blow up the comet that’s headed right this way! As stiffly directed by Mimi Leder, this thick slice of ham errs on the side of solemnity. It may the be most earnest end-of-the-world picture since Stanley Kramer’s atomic-doom drama On the Beach. There are a couple of classic melodramatic flourishes: an estranged father and daughter who share a tearful reconciliation as a Godzilla-sized tidal wave looms on the horizon; and an astronaut, communicating on video with his loved ones back on Earth, who follows whispered instructions from a buddy lurking just off camera–so that his little boy won’t realize that he’s been struck blind. This grand six-part adaptation of Sir Walter Scott’s rousing adventure of the Middle Ages makes the most of its generous running time. In the course of five hours, director Stuart Orme tells the epic tale of the idealistic young knight Ivanhoe (Steven Waddington) and his battle against the evil Templar Bois-Guilbert (Ciaran Hinds, whose thoughtful performance gives his dark character a compelling dimension). Caught between the rivalries and religious struggles are Ivanhoe’s betrothed Rowena (Victoria Smurfit) and the brave, beautiful Jewess healer Rebecca (Susan Lynch), who wins Ivanhoe’s heart with her courage. Set against the historical backdrop of a Britain straining under the corrupt rule of Prince John while Richard the Lionhearted fights in the Crusades, director Stuart Orme makes up for a small budget (the crowd scenes are somewhat skimpy) with sweep, scale, and the lush green British countryside of verdant forests and rolling hills, where ancient castles still stand. While this production can’t compete with the majesty of the gorgeous 1952 Hollywood production, Orme creates his own vision in which Merrye Olde England is grounded in earthy colors, creating a country of both sunny fields and dark, dangerous timberlands, open sunlit courts, and cramped candlelit inns. The uniformly superb cast etches vivid characters and the length allows the novel’s rich array of subplots to play out (including appearances by Robin Hood and his men and the Black Knight) and slowly wind together for the exciting conclusion. –Sean Axmaker

After reading the previous review I had to post a review of this movie so that people will not be mislead. Although I am quite willing to admit my ignorance of Asian art, whether Chinese, Japanese or other, I consider this movie can be enjoyed on its possess terms. Although the Pillowbook was confusing and disjointed to me at times, it was also challenging and heavenly. For the previous reviewer to claim that all the characters acted in a monotone is simply erroneous. Vivian Wu gave a subtle, nuanced and deeply emotional performance, and Ewan McGregor was improbable as Jerome. Far from acting in a monotone, McGregor played Jerome with an infectious sense of fun during the early stages of his and Nagiko’s relationship. Later, when Nagiko rejects him, his agony is vividly expressed and quite palpable. Additionally, to prick this subtle and intense movie to “a fetish for naked Asian men” is patently unfair. There is nudity in the film, (although primarily of Wu and McGregor, neither of whom is an Asian man), but it is very tastefully done and relevant to the situation. In conclusion I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys subtle and visually magnificent films. However, if you require lot’s of special effects, explosions and action in a film, this is not the movie for you.
THE PILLOW BOOK goes where few films have dared. Peter Greenaway is a fresh artist and has created a touching legend in a cinematic technique that is clearly his beget. Simply stated, The Pillow Book is a journal kept by Japanese women who write private thoughts about desire, beauty, sensuality, and the moments in life that are indescribably unforgetable. In this narrative we survey the unfolding of the life of a daughter of a calligrapher/writer who is able to provide for this beloved family and all their traditions by his assignations with his publisher. The child is taught her father’s skills, each birthday having her father write the tale of creation on her face, signed by ‘god’ on her benefit. This ‘writing on the body’ is eventually the means of gaining revenge on her father’s demeaning publisher: she searches for the perfect lover (one who can effect fancy as well as write beautifully in calligraphy) only to secure a British translator (who happens to be the lover of her publisher) who encourages the girl to write her uniquely fresh books on his body – the matrix for delivery of her book to the publisher, a man who otherwise has rejected her gifts. To philosophize the ending would spoil the mesmerizing intrigue of the film. Suffice it to say that appreciate and honor eventually triumph…
The techniques of cinematic magic include the simultneous consume of Shaded and White photogrpahy with Color photography, screens within screens, unexcited life within motion, the wonder of observing Japanese writing, the exercise of written scrolls superimposed on moments of anecdote telling. Greenaway is one of the very few directors who is unafraid of frontal nudity. He has the beauty of Vivian Wu and Ewan McGregor which he paints sensually, allowing the camera to thought the entire body being adorned both with calligraphy and with cherish making. But seeing is believing and for those who thirst for originality in art, for adoration of the human execute, for sensitive account telling with a subject that is wholly original, then this film is a MUST.
